Nefes/Breathe which includes fifty-three selected caricatures featured in Agos newspaper for the last five years by OHAN (Ohannes Şaşkal), will be exhibited at 18:00 in Schneidertempel Art Gallery on December 12th, 2018. The exhibition is open until January 6th, 2019.
Visiting hours are between 11:00 and 18:00 on Wednesdays and Sundays.
Ohannes Şaşkal, known as OHAN, was born in 1959 in Istanbul. He spent his childhood in his hometown, Amasya. After attending Hurriyet Elementary School for two years, he went to Istanbul to complete Nersesyan Elementary School in Halıcıoğlu and Surp Haç Armenian High School as a boarding student, respectively. In 1982 he graduated from Istanbul University with a bachelor degree in Pharmacy.
He started to draw caricatures in 1977. His first work was published by Cumhuriyet newspaper in February 1978. He was featured in several newspapers such as Cumhuriyet, Dünya, Demokrat in different periods until September 12th, 1980. Between 1989 and 1990 his works were published in the weekly Sokak magazine while he drew for the Armenian newspaper Marmara for a long time.
In 1997 his booklet bkz.(see) came out and was followed by the album Karakutu (Blackbox) which was published by Aras Yayıncılık in 2001. In January 2008, Ümit Kartoğlu and Ohan had an exhibition in Paris in memory of Hrant Dink with the focus on “migration-integration-assimilation” which led to the publishment of their exhibition album Le Chiendent (Ayrık Otu) in December 2007. Three years later, Placebo was exhibited in Schneidertempel Art Gallery and was also published by Aras Yayıncılık again with the same title.
Ohan still draws for the weekly Agos newspaper.
